Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC)’s Flood Forecasting and Warning System (Under Implementation)

Kolkata faces at least 7 to 8 heavy rainfall events per year, leading to stagnation of water in many places across the city. A flat terrain, poor natural drainage, cyclones, tidal blockage of drainage channels cause flooding and water logging in the city. Flood Forecasting and Warning System (FFWS) is being implemented as a flood management and mitigation initiative. About 400 real-time sensors are proposed to be installed to monitor flooding across vulnerable areas and status of storm water drainage system across the city. The data will be communicated to the KMC control room and the real-time status of inundation will be displayed on the Flood Monitoring Dashboard. The dashboard will also integrate precipitation forecasts and provide scenarios from past and expected extreme events. The dashboard can be accessible to computers and mobile phones through internet. It will provide location specific SMS alerts to enable pre-emptive action. This will aid in developing flood informed urban development and management.
